Coastal Three Story

Coastal Contemporary Detached Visualization

Project Overview

This luxury home project in Malibu, CA arrived with ambition. Coastal Three Story needed 2 photorealistic exterior views covering everything from hero marketing shots to detailed design-review angles.

The Challenge

The timeline was compressed. The residential architect had a launch date that wasn’t moving, which meant our production schedule had zero slack for extended revision cycles.

The design language was distinctive — a mix of forms and materials that doesn’t photograph itself. Translating that into a render that feels lived-in rather than clinical took several rounds of material and lighting refinement.

Our Approach

Landscape and entourage came last but mattered enormously. Trees, people, vehicles, sky — these contextual elements are what make a render feel like a photograph instead of a diagram.

We ran the first round of test renders at reduced resolution to get quick feedback on composition, materials, and overall mood. This let us catch issues early when changes were cheap, not late when they weren’t.

The modelling phase was methodical. We built the geometry from the architectural plans, cross-referencing elevations and sections to catch anything that might read differently in three dimensions than it does on paper.

The Result

All 2 images were delivered on schedule within 1-2 weeks. The residential architect has used the package across their website, printed materials, and investor presentations.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you capture the layered depth of stacked porches and open carport areas in a three-story coastal rendering?

We use carefully calibrated atmospheric perspective and ambient occlusion to ensure each level—carport, lower porch, and upper deck—reads as a distinct spatial plane, giving the viewer an accurate sense of the building's vertical rhythm.

What challenges are unique to visualizing light-colored clapboard siding on coastal residential exteriors?

Light blue and white finishes demand precise control of specular highlights and subtle shadow gradation so the siding reads as textured wood rather than flat paint, especially under the bright, diffused lighting typical of beachfront environments.

What is the typical turnaround for a luxury coastal residential exterior visualization like this?

A three-story exterior with detailed material work—clapboard siding, white trim, and landscaping—is typically delivered in 5–7 business days from model receipt, with one round of revisions included.

How do residential architects use renders of multi-story coastal homes during the approval process?

Architects present these visualizations to clients and coastal review boards to demonstrate compliance with height, setback, and aesthetic guidelines, making it far easier to secure design approval than with elevations alone.

What makes luxury coastal residential exteriors a distinct category in architectural visualization?

Coastal projects require balancing environmental storytelling—ocean light, salt-air material weathering, native landscaping—with precise architectural detail, so the render conveys both the lifestyle promise and the design intent simultaneously.
